Obstetric trauma
WHAT IS IT?
Obstetric trauma is trauma that occurs during delivery. This can include but not be limited to
- Episiotomy
- Use of forceps or ventouse (suction cup on the baby's head)
- Post partum Haemorrhage
- Tearing - Grade 1-4
- OASI ( Obstetric Anal Sphincter Injury) . Grade 3-4 tears involve the anal sphincter and can as a consequence have an effect on anal continence. These occur in 6% of 1st births and 5% of secondary births
WHAT are the symptoms?
Some of the symptoms following obstetric trauma can include; Urinary incontinence, faecal incontinence, vaginal wind, pelvic organ prolapse, pelvic pain, hip pain, lower back pain. Women can also experience PTSD and will need to seek the help of a trained psychotherapist or counsellor.

WHich APPOINTMENT should i book?
A Women's Health Physiotherapy appointment is 1hr in length and costs £80.
Prior to your appointment you will be sent a new patient questionnaire to give me some detailed information in advance. This makes sure we can make the most of the appointment time.
I will then conduct a thorough functional assessment to see how you move and if you consent we will conduct an internal examination to assess the pelvic floor. Once the assessment is completed, time allowing we will start treatment and make a treatment plan.

HOW WILL YOU FEEL AFTER YOUR APPOINTMENT?
After your appointment you will have a better understanding of your body, where your pelvic floor is and how to contract it, what your posture is like and how it will impact your symptoms and what you can do to manage and treatment your symptoms.
