Urinary incontinence
WHAT IS IT?
Urinary incontinence occurs in 1:3 adult females and comes in a number of forms. It is the inability to maintain urinary continence or an increase in urination due to a number of causes.
WHAT are the symptoms?
Stress Incontinence: Incontinence occurs when you cough, sneeze, jump or laugh.
Urinary Frequency: This is when you feel you need to empty your bladder more than 6-7 times a day.
Overactive Bladder: This is urinary urgency ( when you experience a sudden compelling desire to pass urine and have difficulty deferring or holding it.). If you are unable to defer and experience leakage this is called Urge Urinary incontinence. You may also experience an increase in night time urination (nocturia).
Mixed Urinary incontinence: This is when you experience both stress incontinence and urinary urgency.

WHY DOES IT HAPPEN?
Urinary incontinence can have a number of reasons. Some of the causes are as follows: weakness in your pelvic floor, tightness / overactivity in your pelvic floor, Birth trauma and injury, menopause, hormonal imbalance, smoking, obesity, poor biomechanics and muscle weakness.

WHICH APPOINTMENT SHOULD I BOOK?
A Women's Health Physiotherapy appointment is 1hr in length and costs £80.
Prior to your appointment you will be sent a new patient questionnaire to give me some detailed information in advance. This makes sure we can make the most of the appointment time.
I will then conduct a thorough functional assessment to see how you move and if you consent we will conduct an internal examination to assess the pelvic floor. Once the assessment is completed, time allowing we will start treatment and make a treatment plan.

HOW WILL YOU FEEL AFTER YOUR APPOINTMENT?
After your appointment you will have a better understanding of your body, where your pelvic floor is and how to contract it, what your posture is like and how it will impact your symptoms and what you can do to manage and treat your symptoms.
